ALABAMA EMERGENCY NET "J" Procedure

3/30/2000

1. Read the Preamble: (Do not read the parts in parentheses.)

"Calling all members of the Alabama Emergency Net ‘J’. This is _________, located in ____________________, your net control station for tonight.

The Alabama Emergency Net ‘J’ is part of the Alabama Emergency Net System and is affiliated with the Amateur Radio Emergency Service (ARES).

The AENJ meets daily on oh-one, six-one (.01/.61) at eighteen hundred (18:00) hours local time, operating through the W4JNB repeater. Alternate frequencies are oh-eight, six-eight (.08/.68 ) using a 100 Hz tone to access and two eight, eight -eight (28/88 using a 103.5 Hz tone to access),  five-two (.52) simplex may also be used

The purpose of this net is to train its members to be more proficient in handling traffic in emergency situations. The roll is called in alphabetical order. This is a directed net.

This is ___________ standing by for any station with emergency or priority traffic, business, or announcements for the net.

Do we have a liaison station going to the ‘M’ net (Alabama Traffic Net ‘M’) tonight?"

2. When emergency traffic is listed, always pass it immediately on the net frequency. Pass priority traffic immediately after emergency traffic then allow business and announcements. All formal traffic should be passed on frequency as soon as possible after it is listed. Informal traffic may be moved off frequency or held until after closing the net. If held, be sure to call the stations who listed the traffic when closing the net. Pass all traffic going out of the repeater coverage area to the liaison station.

3. Take a quick standby for stations with traffic. Pass their traffic.

4. Stations who need to secure early. There are two choices here entirely at the discretion of the net control. You may either (1) Excuse all stations who wish to secure early. Do not ask for, or accept, check-ins from stations who wish to secure early other than those with traffic; or (2) Accept check-ins from stations wishing to secure early, then ask if anyone needs any of these stations before they secure. If anyone wants to talk to one of these stations, move them off frequency. Then instruct the stations which have checked-in: "You may secure at your pleasure."

5. Call the roll. Pass any additional formal traffic when it is listed. When calling the roll by prefix, take check-ins in large blocks stopping only when traffic is listed or when you get a pause of five seconds.

6. Take a quick standby for late stations, visitors, or new stations. Pass traffic if any is listed.

7. Identify the net and your station at least every 10 minutes.

8. Close the net. After all business, thank everyone for checking-in, excuse all stations, and close the net promptly. If anyone had traffic scheduled to be passed after net, turn the frequency over to them.

9. Swap shop. At the discretion of the net control, you may conduct a swap shop on frequency after net, but this is not a part of the net. It is acceptable, however, to take late check-ins after the swap shop.

10. Send the net manager (WB4LQX) a net report as soon as possible after calling the net. The report should be sent on the net by formal radiogram and should contain the following:

a. Date of net and call sign of the net control station (NCS)

b. Number of stations checking in (QNI).

c. Number of formal messages handled (QTC).

d. Call signs of stations performing liaison (relaying traffic from or to the ‘M’ net)

 e. If the net is called into an emergency session, or emergency traffic is passed, describe the emergency and give the beginning and ending times of the net sessions (and dates if lasting more than one day). .
